“I’m continually fascinated by how a simple sketch can be transformed into a complex, beautiful, and functional piece of architecture. Figuring out how to translate an initial idea into a building that influences people and their everyday experiences, is what I love about the practice of architecture.”

Over the past 33 years Mark has been responsible for many of the firm’s most successful buildings. In 2023, Mark’s progressive roles as lead design principal and firm President is shifting gears as he steps back to balance select design opportunities with more time for personal pursuits.

Mark’s design approach is rooted in timeless principles of modern architecture for simple, functional, and enduring buildings. His ability to achieve consensus throughout the design process allows for the free flow of concepts and ideas. A gifted designer, he then transforms visions and intentions into compelling architectural concepts that succinctly illustrate the intent of a building and the spaces within. His work spans the realm of public architecture including updates to historically significant buildings.

Mark is particularly adept at finding beautifully appropriate, cost-effective design solutions. A recent example is The Hive—a unique venue of community spaces shared by Spokane Public Libraries and Spokane Public Schools. Taking contextual inspiration from its location on a gritty arterial street, the vibrant building celebrates common materials and simple gestures like brightly painted CMU blocks, bold signage, and roll-up glass doors to create a transparent, welcoming presence in an industrial/commercial zone.
