A bright new building serving both high school and middle schools maximizes District resources while retaining distinct identities.
PROJECT DETAILS
Central Kitsap High School is a comprehensive educational facility with a strong sense of place with a distinct high school identity even while collocated with Central Kitsap Middle School.
The result of many years of planning, Central Kitsap High School / Middle School represents a new District direction to consolidate the two schools into one combined facility.
Previously, the schools shared a campus but maintained two buildings with separate identities. Bringing them together to share common support infrastructure (mechanical and electrical systems, food service facility, CTE spaces, etc.) accomplishes many district goals, including increased safety and security, maintaining each schools’ identity, maximizing future flexibility, providing a community asset, and enhancing project delivery. The shared building features a distinct identity for each school through thoughtful site circulation, wayfinding, signage, and scale.
Situated to maximize the natural character of a steeply sloped site with views of the surrounding area, the GCCM team navigated complex site issues to take advantage of available buildable areas and to allow for full access and operation of the existing facilities during all phases of construction. The fully integrated team also explored various systems and delivery methods and with carefully coordinated attention to detail seamlessly integrated a value-generating prefab metal CTE building into a cohesive campus layout.
