Aki Kurose Middle School

The modernization and expansion of Aki Kurose Middle School reimagines the school as a contemporary, student-centered learning environment while preserving deep ties to the surrounding community and legacy of Akiko Kurose. The daughter of Japanese immigrants, Akiko was a social justice activist and beloved educator whose advocacy for peace and racial equality earned her a United Nations Human Rights Award. The design thoughtfully disrupts the institutional nature of the existing school, replacing it with an authentic reflection of the students, educators, and community it serves. By weaving together moments of liberation where students feel truly seen, valued, and empowered, the new design fosters a deep sense of belonging and connection.

The plan includes a full renovation of the existing building, selective demolition, and the addition of a new two-story classroom wing connected by a skybridge. The reorganization of the campus strengthens relationships between students and educators while enhancing connectivity to the surrounding community. Two courtyards anchor the school’s layout, creating inviting spaces for learning, reflection, and gathering. A new welcoming entry and porch, inspired by the origami “valley fold,” symbolizes openness and inclusion while redefining the school’s presence as a vibrant community hub.

Inside, the learning environment is transformed with flexible, adaptable spaces that break free from traditional classroom models. State-of-the-art classrooms, expanded common areas, and breakout spaces offer students opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and self-expression. Sustainability is a core focus, with thoughtful site planning that maximizes natural light, enhances energy efficiency, and integrates outdoor learning opportunities. Throughout, the design fosters unifying connections between people and place, reinforcing the school’s identity as a space where all voices are heard and valued.

Guiding the design process are three core frameworks:

• Aki Kurose Core 4 Mindsets, which emphasize academic growth, social-emotional well-being, community engagement, and environmental stewardship.
• BlackSpace Manifesto, ensuring historically marginalized voices are not just included but celebrated through a design that acknowledges and amplifies their experiences.
• Stakeholder & Community Input, gathered through extensive engagement with students, educators, families, and neighbors to create a school that is a true reflection of those who call Aki Kurose home.

Through intentional design, moments of liberation, and a deep respect for the school’s history, this modernization transforms Aki Kurose Middle School into a place of empowerment and equity. By dismantling institutional barriers and fostering an authentic sense of community, the school becomes more than a learning space—it becomes a catalyst for connection, inspiration, and future possibility.
