Spokane Valley Library has received an AIA Washington Civic Design Merit Award! Recipients of this statewide recognition represent the finest standards in innovation, sustainability, building performance, and overall integration of the building and surrounding community.
This vibrant, contemporary library in a park is the cornerstone of a developing civic campus in partnership with the Spokane County Library District. It replaces an outdated 50-year-old building to provide the community with its first 21st century library. Rooted in Spokane Valley’s rural and agricultural history, the library’s design emphasizes the use of everyday materials in innovative ways. The simplicity, functionality, and durability of metal panel and CMU provides an engaging and low maintenance building that reflects the hardworking community in which it resides. The generous use of glazing provides plenty of natural daylight and celebrates transparency with the park and street front.
Jury comments called out how this building was able to make ‘something truly remarkable and special’ on a modest public sector budget and that its layout and massing clearly communicates what is happening inside.
The new Spokane Valley Library is a multifunctional community hub, reflecting the area’s resourceful culture and enhancing the quality of community life through public engagement, thoughtful design, and sustainable practices.
