PROJECT DETAILS
Located in the heart of downtown overlooking the magnificent Spokane River and falls, much of the building remained unchanged from its original mid-90’s format. Following passage of a public library bond, this flagship library is transformed into a citywide hub of innovative 21st century library services and gathering spaces. Far reaching updates include live radio broadcast and media studios, a business lab, meeting rooms, vibrant river themed children’s discovery play space, café, serenity space for quiet reading and study, and indigenous focused nxʷyxʷyetkʷ Hall celebrating site history. A spectacular new atrium features captivating hanging art by John Rogers suspended over an expansive staircase providing seating and tiered performance space. This multi-story open space visually connects all floors, bringing natural light and clear wayfinding to improve the dynamic flow throughout the library.
A new entry hall presents a visible entry sequence to the building, with a café for informal gathering. Library collections begin on the second floor with access to an adjacent retail area across a skywalk. Numerous meeting rooms and small study rooms punctuate all floors, offering a variety of choices for community use. Outside, open plazas surround the library fronting pedestrian walkways along the Spokane River and connecting to the lively retail street.
The library is a popular meeting and gathering destination, making it a hub of city activity and popular place to be in a vibrant city. Designed in association with Group 4 Architecture.
