Aspiration & Achievement
A community anchor that celebrates the transition between prairie and neighborhood while fostering belonging, learning, and connection for generations of students.
PROJECT DETAILS
Situated at the edge of Airway Heights where emerging neighborhoods meet the open prairie, Skyway Elementary was designed as a community anchor for one of the region’s fastest-growing areas. Created to relieve overcrowding while supporting future growth, the school provides a welcoming environment that reflects the character, values, and rhythms of the surrounding community.
The design balances a forward-looking educational vision with the scale and familiarity of a neighborhood school. Most students arrive on foot or by bicycle, making walkability and connection to the surrounding community central to the planning approach. Playfields, parks, and outdoor learning opportunities extend the learning environment beyond the building and reinforce the school’s role as a daily gathering place. Designed for high community use, the Commons, gymnasium, and library can remain accessible after hours while classroom areas are secured, supporting recreation, events, and local partnerships.
At the heart of the school, a light-filled Commons serves as the center of student life. Connected to the library, gymnasium, stage, and outdoor play areas, the space encourages interaction, visibility, and a strong sense of belonging. Throughout the building, access to daylight and views to the surrounding landscape create an environment that feels open, connected, and secure.
Inspired by the agricultural heritage of the region, the architecture draws from the colors, textures, and materials of the surrounding prairie. Warm wood tones, durable masonry, and metal cladding create a timeless aesthetic that balances performance with character. Reflecting both the evolving neighborhood and the rural landscape that surrounds it, Skyway Elementary creates a strong sense of identity for students, families, and the broader community while remaining distinctly rooted in place.
