We’re pleased to announce Liberty Park Library in Spokane has won an AIA Seattle Honorable Mention Design Award.

Located in historic Liberty Park, originally designed by the noted Olmsted Brothers, the library sits in the heart of a Spokane neighborhood offering views of basalt cliffs and old growth trees. The library is rooted to its unique place and history through form and materiality. Its design is reminiscent of familiar picnic shelters with its honest simplicity while color, tone, and texture reference regional roots in logging and farming. The building plan is simple and open, offering abundant daylight and views.

This popular library in a park draws people from throughout the district, expanding opportunities for community connection and learning in an underserved area, bringing new energy to the heart of its diverse neighborhood.

Jury comments noted…
“We were very attracted to the beauty and simplicity of the building, its economy of means are both assertive and quiet. The interpretation of the library as a viewfinder for the landscape with a glassy horizonal shed of beautiful material palette, the colors, tones and textures makes it feel as if it is one with the park around it. Libraries are such a vital program for communities and to have such a building that really welcomes people, makes it feel like a place you would want to be.”
