Salish Coast Elementary School has won a Grand Prize Award in the Learning by Design Educational Facilities Design Awards!
Winning entries were designated as having achieved all elements of evaluation criteria: Design Challenges and Innovation; Sustainability and Social Impact; Interior Architecture/Design; Next Generation Learning; Functional Design/Effective space Planning; and Community Needs.
Leveraging the power of place, this elementary school reflects and reinforces close ties to its maritime community along the Salish Sea in Port Townsend, WA. Both indoor and outdoor learning environments, including a community garden, provide the backdrop for meaningful learning connecting students with the natural world.
Jury Comments – “Embracing the Pacific Northwest climate, the school provides sheltered outdoor spaces and integrates flexibility and transparency for dynamic learning experiences. With the entry through the gardens and bioswales, and the inner courtyard that runs the length of the building, a connection to the outdoors was clearly established. ”
