Expansion of a 1960’s era chapel creates a vibrant home for the theology department and campus ministry program, lightly revisiting the original mid-century building with contemporary touches.

Although in a prominent location near the campus entry, the building had lost its appeal hidden behind overgrown trees and shrubs, and with limited space for expanding programs. A wrap-around addition with large windows engages the campus greenspace with an entry located within direct view of walkways. The expansion’s deliberately simple shape was designed to complement its relationship with the existing chapel. A rhythmic window system of open brickwork provides liturgical undertones—a composition of transparency and materiality to maintain privacy.
